Social media has always been a difficult subject. Even from myspace to livejournal.
I joined Facebook back in 2004 and remember for awhile enjoying it. There was a period when you needed a work network or university address to join, and it was full of people discussing their projects and goals.
But then something happened. Facebook allowed anyone to join, and it turned into mindless echo chambers of people blindly liking everything. Today the current social media networks feel like corporate liberalism. Not the place for me.
Mastodon is a way to join the Fediverse, to be part of a community, and to reclaim your freedom in social media.
What is the Fediverse?
The fediverse (a portmanteau of “federated” and “universe”) is an ensemble of federated (ie interconnected) servers that are used for web publishing, and file hosting, but which while independently hosted, can communicate with each other. On different servers (instances), users can create so-called identities. These identities are able to communicate over the boundaries of the instance because the software running on the servers supports one or more communication protocols which follow an open standard. As an identity on the fediverse, users are able to post text and other media, or two follow posts by other identities.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse [LINK]
I knew something was wrong when Facebook advertisers wanted to target teenagers who felt “worthless”: [LINK]. Or perhaps just as bad, is when Twitter was hesitant to moderate neo-nazi and fascist figures: [LINK]. Plus. It would be nice to feel like the customer, and not the product being sold.
If you are more of a visual person, here is a short video for more information:
Because of all of this, I decided to spin up my own instance. Deep down inside I would love the web to be more open and less centralized. Plus it never hurts to be supportive of open source solutions.
I don’t think I will post much to the other platforms, but will keep them up for the time being.
If this is something that interested you, there are numerous instances to join each with their own niche. Some focus on the LGBTQ+ community, others focus on technology and current events. And the primary instance is [mastodon.social] is run by the actual developer. Or you can spin up your own instance: [LINK].

See you on the other side!
